Acropolis

Greek term which refers to the portion of a town or city that is built on a hilltop for defensive purposes. In ancient Greece there were many city-states for geographical reasons, and there was often an "acropolis" in a city-state. The character Creusa was raped by Apollo in a cave at the foot of the Acropolis in Euripides' play Ion.
