Whigs

Whigs were a party in English politics from the late 1600's to the early 1800's. They were a liberal party who felt that Parliament should have more power then the Monarchy. In the 19th century the Whigs became the Liberal Party[1]. The Whigs became the Liberal Party in the 19th century and in the United States, during the 1980's, they effectively became the old Democrat Party[2]. This continued until the Republican Party attracted so many anti-slavery Wing's that the party grow to irreverence. The last Whig presidentially candidate to run for office was in 1856[3].
