A trowel is a small tool used in a variety of small-scale activities.
The normal trowel (used for gardening) has a curved, scooped blade that is purposely intended to disturb and remove earth. Digging, planting, and weeding are common examples of use.
A pointed trowel (also known as a bricklayer's trowel) has a flat blade and ends at a point, which is useful for construction, such as applying mortar and concrete. The pointed trowel is used as a standard choice of excavation for archaeologists.
The trowel is regarded as an important symbol to the organization of Freemasons.
