The attractive little town of Espalion on the River Lot is in the French department of Aveyron. The Pont-Vieux is a lovely red sandstone packhorse bridge that spans the River Lot. The Vieux Palais on the left is a domed and turreted chateau dating from 1572. It is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Espalion has been, and remains, an important stopping-off point on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain - the Way of St James. In France this route runs from Le Puy to the southwest towards the Pyrenees mountains and Spain.
