The term Ground Zero describes the site of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, destroyed in the terrorist outrage of September 11 2001. However, it was coined much earlier, to describe the centre of impact of the first atomic bomb at Hiroshima in 1945, and was also often used for disasters with a geographical epicentre, such as earthquakes.
