Google Android is an operating system developed for use on mobile cell phones and is a joint effort of the Open Handset Alliance. Anybody can create applications using the Android Software Development kit and Google holds a contest for best applications. All applications can be freely downloaded through the online Android Market.

A manufacturer from Korea, HTC, was the first to market a Google Android phone in the United States, called the G1. October 2008 was the launch date on the T-Mobile network, the only carrier offering the service. It is a 3G phone but will also work of a Wi-fi wireless network. The phone and operating system have gained a reputation as an Apple iPhone competitor. More models will be developed in 2009.
