The George Washington Bridge is the fourth longest suspension bridge in the U.S. It spans the Hudson River and connects Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey. The bridge has 14 lanes of traffic (8 on the upper level, 6 on the lower) and is considered one of the world's busiest bridges. The bridge opened for traffic on October 25, 1931 and is 4,760ft (1,451 m)long. The George Washington Bridge is a toll road when traveling eastbound (heading into Manhattan from New Jersey) and makes about $1 million each day from tolls, which vary depending on type of vehicle and time of day. Pedestrians can cross along sidewalks for free.
