American History Homework Four By Blaise M. Instructor: Andy Schlafly Read the lecture and answer 6 out of these 8 questions:

1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them.

The North supported tariffs because it gave them more money than the South because they exported more goods than the South.

The first part is correct, because the northern manufacturers benefited when the imports were made more expensive due to tariffs, but the second part is wrong: the South exported more than the North. (Minus 1)

2. Do you think States have the right to secede from (leave) the United States? Discuss, including a mention of "nullification doctrine."

Yes the North was purposely trying to CRUSH THE SOUTH by destroying the cotton industry by not only making cotton of their own but also making tariffs which affect the cotton exports and makes the countries that buy it more likely to buy it from somewhere else (this can be compared to the prices on oil in the Middle East.) The Nullification doctrine gives the states the power to have the federal government repeal a law. This act is also known as vetoing a bill (veto is Latin for “I forbid”.)
Good reference to the Latin! But the North didn't want to make cotton. The northern climate is not suited to cotton production. (Minus 1)

3. Who was the most politically conservative of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

James Monroe, because he was an anti-federalist.
Good, but incomplete. There are more important details that demonstrate that Monroe was a conservative. (Minus 1)

4. Many say the War of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view please?

It was necessary because the British thought they could just walk onto our ships and take sailors into impressed service so the American people rose up once again against the British and thus the War of 1812 started.

Excellent answer.

5. Choose any mystery or discussion question from the lecture, and write about it.

6. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain.

I like Marbury vs. Madison because it allowed the states to repeal an act of Congress. The one I don’t like is Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia. Maybe its just because it reminds me of the Dred Scott decision.

Good selection of cases, but your explanation of Marbury v. Madison is not quite right. It established the power of the federal courts (the U.S. Supreme Court) to declare an Act of Congress unconstitutional. (Minus 1)

7. Identify the figures in the cartoon, provide an approximate date, and describe the likely viewpoint of the cartoonist: John Bull is England and sir Bruin is Russia. Lady Colombia is the United States. The view point of the artist is on the peace treaty of Ghent. It was probably around 1814.

The text in the cartoon from left to right (clockwise direction) is: John Bull: Pray Mr. Bruin try if you can make up this little Difference between us-The Wasps and Hornets have Stung me so hard I wish I had never disturbed their Nests. Columbia: I thank you Mr. Bruin but I cannot trust the Bull. 'Tho he has promised to draw his HORNS he must be safe bound to the Stake before I treat with him. Bruin: Let me unite your hands Madam-Johny and I have been very friendly since I sent him my Fleet to take care of----

Good work in explaining the cartoon. (Note spelling: "Columbia", not "Colombia")

8. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840.

That there is a republic of Texas

Right.
