San Remo Resolution

The San Remo Resolution came from the San Remo Conference that took place in April 1920 in San Remo, Italy. The conferees set forth boundaries for territories captured in the just-concluded First World War. This included territories taken from the Ottoman Empire by British forces, and by the Arab guerilla coalition led by Major T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia").

Among the key declarations was that the land then known as Palestine come under British mandatory rule (and that Lebanon come under French mandatory rule). The San Remo Resolution reaffirmed the 1919 declaration by Lord Balfour, then the British Foreign Secretary, that the Jewish people should have an ancestral homeland to return to.
