For the city in New York State see Troy (NY).
Troy (Greek: ΤÏοία) also known as Ilium, was the chief city of the Trojans in Asia Minor. It was attacked and laid siege to by the Greeks in the Trojan War, an historical event described in poetic terms in Homer's Iliad. The German archaeologist Heinrich Schleimann identified the most probable site of Troy in the 1870's.
