Transnistria, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), (also known as Transdnistria) is a self-proclaimed independent republic occupying the territory of Moldova east of the River Dnister. The 'republic' takes the form of a long and narrow strip of land (over 250 miles in length) sandwiched between the rest of Moldova and Ukraine. It has an area of 1,607 square miles (4,163 sq km) and a population of 555,000 (2005 est). The capital city is Tiraspol. Transnistria declared its independence of Moldova in 1990 and was able to secure separation thanks to the presence on its territory of the Soviet 14th Army.
