The Tale of Genji was a novel written in the eleventh century AD by Lady Murasaki about life in the Japanese Emperor's court during the Heian Period.

The main character, Genji, was a prince who used his power to seduce women and kidnap girls. He provided each one with their own room and individual garden in a mansion he built especially for his wives and concubines.

In his old age he repented his sins and turned to Buddhism for solace.
