Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu (Boulogne sur Mer, France, 1921 - ) is a French painter, sculptor, designer and illustrator. He gained an international reputation in the 1950âs in the style of Lyrical Abstraction since his expositions in US and Japan and especially after the 1963 Grande Rétrospective au Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
His large paintings are created very rapidly and impulsively. Despite his unconventional technique, he considers himself a historical painter working with abstract subject matter. [1]
Mathieu's works have been exposed at: the Venice Biennales of 1948, 1950, and 1956, and in 1952 in a one-man show in Paris. [2] He wrote in 1967 Le Privilège d'être.
