Emperor Akihito is the eldest son of Emperor Hirohito, and the former Emperor of Japan. He ascended to the throne on January 7, 1989. On April 30, 2019, he abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne, leaving it to his son, Naruhito.

Reign
In Japan, during his reign, Akihito was never referred to by his given name, but rather was referred to as "His Majesty the Emperor" (天çéä¸, Tenno Heika) which may be shortened to "His Majesty" (éä¸, Heika).
The era of Akihito's reign from 1989 to 2019 bears the name Heisei (å¹³æ), and according to custom he will be renamed Emperor Heisei (å¹³æ天ç, Heisei TennÅ, see "posthumous name") as the 125th Emperor of Japan by order of the Cabinet after his death.
