Lieutenant Governor of Michigan
2018 election
Former state senator Gretchen Whitmer, the Democrat nominee in the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial election, selected Gilchrist to be her running mate for lieutenant governor.[1] The pair won the general election with 53.3% of the vote.[2]
Chinese Communist ties
Garlin Gilchrist attended a controversial âcollaboration summitâ between Chinese Communist Party officials and U.S. Governors. The summit, which occurred in May of 2019, was touted as an âexclusive deal making opportunityâ for closer financial ties between the Chinese government and their U.S. counterparts.
The summit featured âone-on-one meetingsâ between the U.S. and their Chinese Communist Party counterparts, and, at the time, was met with harsh criticism from the Trump administration for its âties to Beijingâs overseas propaganda wing â the Chinese Peopleâs Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFCC), which co-hosted the conference.â
Its parent organization, China General Chamber of Commerce, also features a host of executives from controversial Chinese Communist Party-linked companies on its board such as Huawei, China Telecom, China Mobile, and Inspur Group. All of the aforementioned firms have been identified by the U.S. Department of Defense as proxies for the Chinese military for over two decades.[3]
Tenure
It was announced in April 2020 that Gilchrist was named by Gov. Whitmer to lead the Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities.[4]
