George Jones
George Glenn Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas on September 12, 1931 and after serving a stint in the Marines decided on a career as a country singer. He also sang gospel music and rock and roll. Nicknamed âThe Possumâ, George Jones has had more songs than any other singer on the country charts. Over a fifty-year period he has landed on the country Hit Parade a total of 167 times.
In 1955 he had his first top 10 hit with "Why, Baby, Why,â and his first #1 country hit in 1959 with âWhite Lightning.â Since then George has dominated the country charts with a string of hits that included âTender Years,â âShe Thinks I Still Care,â âThe Race Is On,â âThe Grand Tour,â âThe Door,â âHe Stopped Loving Her Today" (the song literally revived his flagging career, though he actually hated the song), âIâll Always Get Lucky With You,â âStill Doinâ Time,â âSheâs My Rock,â âWhoâs Gonna Fill Their Shoesâ and âThe Right Left Hand.â
With seven âGoldâ and two âPlatinumâ albums, George Jones has dozens of âGoldâ singles to his credit.
In his half century of stardom, George Jones has been country musicâs âMale Vocalist of The Yearâ numerous times, a Grammy winner, elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992, given âThe Pioneer Awardâ by The Academy of Country Music in 1993 and in recent years ranked #3 of the 40 greatest men in country music history according to Country Music Television.
