The silent e is a concept in phonics that addresses the effect an omitted "e" (due to adding an -ing or -ed ending) continues to have on a preceding vowel in a word, by making it a long rather than a short vowel. Examples are:[1]
- rise + ing -> rising
- bake + ing -> baking
- hope + ed -> hoped
