King John (December 24, 1166 – 18/19 October 1216) was a medieval king of England. He was born John Lackland and was the son of Henry II and was the younger brother and successor of Richard the Lionheart, Richard I of England. He was King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine and Count of Anjou from April 6, 1199 until his death.
John succeeded his brother to the throne and was largely regarded as a conceited, lazy, selfish and tyrannical ruler. It is said that during his fits of temper, he would roll on the floor, chewing on the legs of tables, rugs, or anything else in sightfact.
Whilst almost certainly not as bad as his legend now depicts, he was forced to sign the Magna Carta documents in 1215 by the nobility disgruntled with his leadership and England's heavy losses in France. This document limited the power of the king and established the English Parliament. One of its most important statements was that the king was under the law. John believed that he was the law. It was a series of laws which granted greater freedoms to the nobility and limited the powers of the King.
Part of the reason for the Magna Carta was due to how England chose the Archbishop of Canterbury, the most senior Archbishop of the Church of England. The King's choice was rejected by Rome and King John was excommunicated and eventually had to concede to the Pope's demands.
Eventually King John broke the Magna Carta charter and the nobility replaced him with his son King Henry III.
King John was the inspiration for Prince John in the Robin Hood stories.
