Kauffner,
Long time no hear.

Not sure wikipedia really listens to me but I would support the lifting of your ban. Were you entrapped by certain users who pretty much gang-tackled your every move? Of course you were. I know those editors well since they tried it with me too. The difference was I eventually ignored them and always let an administrator handle the slightest harassment from them. I realized wiki was a different place than it used to be. I also let the diacritics thing go. Was I happy that Wikipedia was going to allow censoring? Not in the least, but consensus was to do just that so I moved on grudgingly. You probably should have done the same since your work was always exemplary and the project could always use that type of knowledge and fortitude.

I do worry that all your previous sleeper accounts/socks will work against a reinstatement. Most admins I converse with find that behavior even worse than the original ban. I would advise to absolutely grovel in apologizing for the sockpuppets and use no excuses at all. The diacritic topic ban seems like a good choice since it was the focal point of almost all the problems. My only other advise would be to accept blame whether you feel you have any blame or not. The Arbcom committee wants to see remorse in writting... if it's mostly blaming everyone but yourself they may tend to think you haven't changed. So come to them with the reasons you felt you should not have been banned, but also offer them your hat... that you should have handled it better as a veteran editor and that the situation will not repeat itself.

Good luck in your appeal. I sincerely support it. Use this as you see fit.
