He recently decided last year to bring his experience and element of surprise to the Indian Premier League (IPL); he signed a 7 year contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders, one of eight teams involved in the tournament, which saw him take the wickets of world-class batsmen such as Sachin Tendulkar, Thilan Thushara and Brendon McCullum. He is hoping this year to surpass the achievements of his Sri Lankan counterpart Muttiah Muralitharan (Chennai Super Kings), who ironically claimed the wicket of Mendis three times during the inaugural tournament.
