Near the end of the war, he developed a plan to liberate Czechoslovakia from Communist rule. Given the 10,000,000 Soviet troops in Europe at the time, it is highly unlikely that Patton's plan would have liberated [[Czechoslovakia]]. Liberals in the White House did not want a third world war, so his plan was not put into action. Total Allied forces available in Europe were around the figure of 2.5 million.

He attained four-star rank shortly before the end of the war. He died Dec. 21, 1945, after an automobile accident, and was buried in the U.S. military cemetery at Hamm, Luxembourg.
