In March 2018, U.S. Representative Will Hurd, a Moderate Republican from Helotes, Texas, unveiled his plan to reform DACA. Hurd said that he will attempt to by-pass Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and bring various proposals for immigration reform to the House floor without approval of the leadership. Hurd said that his immigration package, for which he expects summer passage, includes "a smart wall" which uses radar and fiber optics, rather than the brick-and-mortar structure envisioned by President Trump. Meanwhile, Trump signaled opposition to a Senate bill that corresponds with some of Hurd's immigration proposals.<ref name=dacafix>Jasper Scherer, "Congressman talks up a way for his DACA fix to pass House, San Antonio Express-News, March 30, 2018, p.
