| | ::::Fine, stand by that comment. Unfortunately, considering we've got far too many instances of people conflating the Founding Fathers with terrorists like the Vietcong or comparing them to the Jacobins as if the respective revolutions are one and the same when they were not, I'd rather not take any chances, lest I end up rooting for Communists thanks to what Lucas said about his inspirations. I already made the mistake about thinking Che was a good guy thanks to Kojima, I have zero intention of falling for something like that again. And besides, like I said, when the author of another franchise explicitly compares Che Guevara with George Washington regarding a character in two different games, make Che seem like a decent guy when he was not (heck, failing to even mention his role in the Cuban Missile Crisis nearly becoming a nuclear war at the very least), not even "death of the author" can fix this issue (and make no mistake, Metal Gear IS fantasy ultimately, which makes it even MORE of a problem. That Lucas specifically geared that garbage to children specifically to indoctrinate them into these views makes it even MORE contemptible. Sure, we adults can know better, but what about the kids? We've already got enough of a problem as it is that teachers teach kids that the French Revolution is just like the American War for Independence for starters.). | | + | :::::Wait a second, did you not know who Che really was before you played Peace Walker? I did, and I cringed at the horrible ignorance being displayed in that game. I also thought, "why are the Sandinistas fighting against the Soviets at the end? The FSLN was BACKED BY the Soviet Union!" You're right, not even "death of the author" can fix that since they are directly referring to a real person who was a very bad man. With Star Wars though, it's easier since it takes place in a galaxy so far removed from ours. About Star Wars though, I watched as a kid and just took it at face value. When I learned about Vietnam, I learned about it as the Communist North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam and the US was protecting the legitimate government of South Vietnam from a Commie invasion. I perceived the Vietcong as collaborators with the invaders, like the Vichy French. Knowing that history, if Lucas came up and told me that stuff, I would think "are you crazy?" People who enjoy Star Wars also enjoy Rambo: First Blood Part II which clearly paints the Vietnamese and their Russian friends in a negative light. I also like Missing in Action, which despite having the same "rescuing POWs" premise, is very different from the Rambo movie, mainly because it gives more attention to the Vietnamese themselves and shows them in a very negative light. The last scene in that movie where Braddock comes in with the POWs after the Vietnamese ambassador firmly asserts "We categorically deny that any American POWs are being held in this country" is just epic. I am also a fan of movies like "The Delta Force" and "Air Force One" which clearly depict terrorists calling themselves "Freedom Fighters" in a negative light. Is there any other forum where I can communicate with you, because this is bordering on the 90/10 rule. [[User:Shobson20|Shobson20]] ([[User talk:Shobson20|talk]]) 18:39, 22 December 2018 (EST) |
