Talk:Civil Rights Act of 1957 (view source)
Revision as of 17:24, July 11, 2020
, 17:24, July 11, 2020→JFK vote on the 1957 Civil Rights Act
:::It's complicated. Ike's AG introduced the bill; Johnson and Russell watered it down by restricting what the AG could do to enforce the bill. Kennedy voted ''for'' the restriction with segregationiosts. I think I can clarify by adding a note to a new citation. :::::The bigger untold story from 1957-58 is, JFK praises Edmund Ross in ''Profiles in Courage'', a hero to the KKK and South who saved [[Andrew Johnson]]'s presidency, defeated Republican civil rights efforts, and was the beginning of the [[Jim Crow]] era. These two actions - watering down the 1957 bill and elevating a hero of the Klan and segregationists, have never been put in perspective.
