In June 2019 Waskom passed an ordinance which declared the city to be an "[[abortion sanctuary city]]" for the unborn, making it illegal to perform [[abortion]]s or operate an abortion clinic within the city, making it the first such city in the United States.  There are no such clinics in the small city—the nearest clinic is 20 miles away in [[Shreveport]]—and in any event the ordinance would not be effective until and unless [[Roe v.
