Howe landed 20,000 men on Long Island (August 22–25).  Attacking on the 27th, he turned the left flank of Putnam's 6,500 troops throwing them back into Brooklyn Heights.  The Americans lost 200 killed and 1,000 captured.  British losses were 400 casualties.
