:In Jesus's day, neither the teaching nor belief in an afterlife was universal. That's why, the New Testament writers tell us, Jesus adopted the pagan term "''hades''", cause no word existed in the OT lexicon. The Book of Job can be helpful in shedding light on the parameters of the debate; look at all the refences to ''sheol'', then in the conclusion of the book, God restores double the number of all the livestock Job lost, but only an equal number of children (because the souls of his first group of children are eternal).  The Pharisees of Jesus' day allowed there to be dissension and debate on the meaning of this passage without advocating a doctrine one way or the other. ::One more note about the Book of Job: it predates Moses and Torah, and various tellings of story exist in several ancient cultures, including Persian. It hints at an afterlife in its final chapter. It is part of the "received text" of Moses and the early chroniclers. Like Hebrews, its authorship is unknown. Its divine origins were recognized as universal and predates the Abrahamic Covenant. Genesis, or the Book of Origins, is not the "first" or oldest book of the bible. [[User:RobSmith|RobS]][[User talk:RobSmith|''Give Peace a chance'']] 00:14, May 9, 2023 (EDT)
