The Khazar myth has existed for over two centuries, all the way back in the early 1800s. In the early years, it was espoused both by Jews and anti-semites. Curiously, the Khazar myth was occasionally promoted for much the opposite reason we see today: some proponents believed that it would discredit anti-semitism. However, as evidence mounted against the theory, and it became more and more popular with Nazis, it is pretty much exclusively found being promulgated by anti-semites in the modern era.
