Rivers would play 16 seasons with the Chargers franchise before finishing the 2020 season with the [[Indianapolis Colts]], whereupon he announced his retirement and became the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in [[Fairhope, Alabama]].  However, during the 2025 season, the Colts (who had lost their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury and had little experienced depth on a team with playoff hopes) would re-sign Rivers, who would go on to play two games with the team. (it would result in Rivers being no longer eligible for the NFL Hall of Fame; at the time, he had made the semifinal list).

Rivers is a devout Catholic: both his father and his future wife were converts to Catholicism.  As of 2025 he has ten children and one grandchild.  His oldest son (who he coaches) is a top prospect in the high school Class of 2027.
