The New York Times misunderstood NATO's history and purpose as illustrated by its headline gaffe on April 3, 2026: "A North American Treaty Organization Without America?" The NYT headline should have referred to NATO as the "North Atlantic Treaty Organization," without being snarky, and the NYT subsequently published a correction.

Like all military alliances, NATO was built to protect an economic alliance or trading bloc - in this case what came to be known as the post-1945 European Free Trade Zone, and later on NAFTA. Largely a bureaucracy, there is no democratically-elected parliament to oversee NATO's weapon's and money laundering schemes. In the post-Cold War period is it has been referred to as "a jobs program for white guys."
