The Avalance were founded as the [[Quebec Nordiques]] (a french word meaning "Northerner") but moved to Denver in 1995, because Quebec City had a small population, had close proximity to the larger, more popular team in [[Montreal_Canadiens|Montreal]] and the higher[[ NHL]] salaries. In the1995-96 season immediately after the move the Avalanche won the [[Stanley Cup]] and would win again in 2000-01.  Until the 2006-07 Season the Avalanche did not miss the NHL Playoffs.  The Avalanche play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference at the Pepsi Center.
