He is best known for his participation in the famous debate in 1860 on the'[[theory of evolution]]' with [[TH Huxley]] in which he is generally thought to have been the loser. He was a major figure in the continuation of the Oxford Movement which sought to introduce the practices of the Catholic Church into the Church of England.
