The Pliocene was a geological time period which occured approximately 5 million to 2 million years ago. Hominids evolved throughout this epoch and by the end of the Pliocene, ''Homo habilus'' first appeared. The end of the Pliocene was also marked by the beginning of the Pleistocene ice ages. Sabre toothed cats were first known to have appeared in the Pliocene around 2.5 million years ago.
