Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the [[United States]] celebrated on the fourth Thursday in [[November]]. The first Thanksgiving celebration was held in [[October]] 1621 by [[Pilgrims]] celebrating the successful harvest by the Plymouth Colony, with the assistance of the Native Americans living in the area, after a difficult winter where many colonists died of starvation.
[[Canada]] also has a Thanksgiving day, which is celebrated on the second Monday in October.
In 1789 President [[George Washington]] proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as the last Thursday in November. In 1941, the United States [[Congress]] passed a resolution decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November.
Traditional thanksgiving foods include: [[turkey]], sweet potatoes, and corn, which were eaten by the Pilgrims on the first Thanksgiving day.
