Gravity and Modern Physics
Newton's Theory of Gravity was one of the earliest triumphs of modern physics. It now stands as both one of the most successful and most mysterious areas of that field. On one hand, the General theory of Relativity is one of the most successful scientific theories to date. On the other hand, how General Relativity might be reconciled with quantum physics during the first few milliseconds of the Big Bang remains an open question, and is one of the hotly contested areas among modern theoretical physicists.  In the 1980s string theory was seen by many physicists as a more likely path towards a particular unification of gravity with the other fundamental forces (electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear forces), but the theory has been a failure.

String theory was first developed in 1984 by American quantom physicist Edward Witten. String Theory holds that all matter in the universe is made up of vibrating one-dimensional "strings" of energy. The theory caused a stir in the scientific community as it resolves the incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity which, as currently formulated, cannot both be right. String theory also replaces the current theory of gravity, substituting instead a theory of intelligent falling, stating that things fall not because they are acted upon by some gravitational force, but because a higher intelligence, is pushing them down. Studies of string theory have revealed that it predicts higher-dimensional objects called branes. String theory strongly suggests the existence of ten or eleven dimensions, as opposed to the usual four, (three spatial and one temporal) used in relativity theory, however, the theory can describe universes with four observable dimensions by a variety of methods.
