The Spartan general [[Lysander]] put back in command after the drowning death of [[Callicratidas]] at the [[Battle of Arginusae]] struck the Athenian fleet while they were moored at night with most of the crews ashore.  The Athenian fleet of nearly 200 vessels was completely destroyed.  Most of the crews were then captured and slaughtered.  It proved to be the pivotal battle of what had been a long see-saw war as Athens was unable to recover.
