√2 is the ratio of 'A' sized paper, not phi
Line 1: Line 1:
The golden ratio is a number, commonly known as phi, defined as 'phi * phi = phi - 1.' In decimal form it is written 1.618... It has been observed that the golden ration is evident in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants, and of veins in leaves.

Phi is also used as the ratio of height to width in European paper specifications - thus an A2 sheet can be formed by cutting in half an A1, and A3 from an A2, and so on, while each paper type remains the same shape as all others.
