McCain has been married twice.  His first marriage, to Carol Shepp, ended in [[divorce]] in 1980. McCain returned from Vietnam to find that Carol had been disfigured in an auto accident. Ross Perot, at the time offering philanthropic assistance for POWs and their families, paid for Carol's treatment during McCain's imprisonment. Upon returning home, McCain began cheating on Carol. Carol dismissed the actions as the effects of his imprisonment and he disfigurement. After meeting Cindy Lou Hensley, McCain obtained a divorce from Carol in exchange for paying Carol's medical bills during her lifetime. Carol continues to defend McCain during his elections and has never unfavorably spoken of him.<ref>http://www.usvetdsp.com/mcaindiv.htm</ref>
