2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 film directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on a 1950 short story by Arthur C. Clarke called The Sentinel. The film takes as its theme the idea that human evolution has been guided by aliens, and the story opens when a large black monolith-type object is discovered on the moon, clearly having been placed their by some intelligent species millions of years earlier, waiting until humans had the technology to get to the moon and find it. The very first scene of the film, however, begins in prehistoric times and features chimp-like creatures supposedly representing human ancestors, and a similar monolith on earth, causing the chimps to fashion weapons and kill each other as a trigger for evolotion. After the discovery of the monolith on the moon a commission of scientists sends a mission to Jupiter to find out more about its origins, in a ship under the control of a computer called HAL (an apparent nod to IBM, taking the three preceding letters of the alphabet). HAL develops conscious thought and goes insane, killing all the astronauts on board bar one, who manages to escape and lands on the surface of Jupiter where he experiences a strange halucinatory regression to childhood and is reborn as some sort of god-like, all-knowing figure.

HAL is conscious but goes insane because of conflicting orders, killing all the astronauts on board bar one, who manages to escape and lands on the surface of the monolith orbiting Jupiter where he experiences a strange halucinatory regression to childhood and is reborn as some sort of god-like, all-knowing figure.
