The Republic has maintained a nominally Catholic ethos since independence. However, in line with a more general liberalization of Irish society since the early nineties, restrictions on the availability of contraception were removed in 1972;  homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993; and the right to divorce was enshrined in the constitution in 1995. Equal Rights legislation guarantees homosexuals the same legal rights as heterosexuals, and the Irish parliament is currently debating the possible legalisation of [[gay marriage]].
