In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries warehouses were generally multi-storeyed brick buildings located close to canal or railway facilities in the middle of cities. Very many such buildings have in recent decades been converted into 'loft apartments' or other residential/leisure related uses. Warehouses now tend to be single-storey 'big shed' type buildings covering a large area, and located at strategic points on the [[motorway]]/interstate network outside or on the periphery of cities.
