In defeating [[Hillary Clinton]] for the Democratic nomination, Obama demonstrated charismatic oratory, strong grass-roots organization, record-setting fund raising, and a strong appeal to African Americans, younger voters, and upscale voters. However he was weak among Catholics, women, downscale voters, rural voters and in Appalachia. As the primary season ended half the Clinton voters said they might not vote for Obama in November, pointing to a major weakness. Nevertheless Obama became a world-wide celebrity, packing large stadiums with adoring fans chanting his mantra, "Yes We Can!". His campaign against [[John McCain]], however, has largely consisted of attacking President George W. Bush, insisting that McCain and Bush overlap by 90%. However by rejecting Clinton as his running mate and selecting the undramatic [[Joe Biden]], Obama created an opening for the GOP. McCain rushed in by naming [[Sarah Palin]], thereby closing the enthusiasm gap, and rallying the conservative base. The Democrats who attacked Palin for inexperience were spotlighting Obama's main weakness against McCain, hurting their own candidate. Obama led McCain in the polls by 6-8 point early in the summer, then saw his lead fade to 2 points. Obama almost always reads from prepared text on a [[teleprompter]] and rarely allows tough questions.<ref>After one debate against [[Hillary Clinton]] in Philadelphia, the Obama campaign announced that the questions were too difficult and that Obama would not agree to future debates with her.</ref><ref name="teleprompter">http://www.weeklystandard.com/content/public/articles/000/000/014/728ofzey.asp</ref>  Indeed, when unable to read from prepared text he often fails miserably at articulating his positions and is caught tripping over his own feet, as displayed in the Saddleback Forum.  He has made several gaffes revealing that he is a [[Muslim]] unaware of basic [[American History Lectures|American history]]:

Obama downplays his [[Islamic]] background by claiming that his [[Kenya|Kenyan]] [[Muslim]] father was a "confirmed [[atheist]]" before Obama was born, but in fact less than 1% of Kenyans are atheists, agnostics or non-religious.<ref>http://www.adherents.com/Na/Na_14.html</ref>  There is apparently no evidence of any Christian activities or local church participation by Obama while he was in Massachusetts from 1988 to 1991.  Finally, Obama abruptly left his church in Chicago in 2008 when it became politically controversial, without first finding another church to join.

To counter the view by many that Obama is an elitist, he began running campaign ads claiming that he "worked his way through college and Harvard Law." This claim was an exaggeration as Obama only held summer jobs while in college and law school<ref>http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/obamas_work_claim.html</ref>, and he would have likely benefited from special scholarships not available to most students.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton later claimed that Obama's great-uncle "served in the 89th Infantry Division that Liberated Ohrdruf, a Subcamp of Buchenwald, the First Camp Liberated by Americans, on April 4, 1945." Given that Obama misrepresented what happened, one can also wonder about his story that his relative went into the attic and did not leave his house for six months afterwards.</ref>

 

Obama said that "[t]here was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, [[Alabama]], because some folks are willing to march across a bridge.
