The GDR (not to be mixed with the Federal Republic of Germany, known nowadays as 'Germany') disapproved Religion in any form. If she would have been a christian she would never had the possibility to study there. How can she be part of a Christian party but not be Christian? That doesn't seem right (but I don't have proof either way).
