Interestingly enough, "French Fries" and "French Toast" are not actually food derived from France.  French Fries are a culinary concept that originated in the French quarter of Switzerland, and "French Toast" originally is derived from Belgium.  Both terms and concepts arrived in the United States of America from soldiers returning from World War I.
