The Guitar Hero series is a series of music video games. The games allow the player to play along to several popular rock songs using a guitar-shaped peripheral. The games are among the most commercially and critically successful of all time.
History
In 2005, the first Guitar Hero was released. It was extremely well received; it became the number two selling game in 2005, following Fight Night: Round 3, earned a ten out of ten from Play Magazine, and 92% and 91% from aggregate critics Gamerankings and Metacritic, respectively. The developer, Harmonix Music Systems, went to work and created Guitar Hero II for the Playstation 2, released in late 2006. Later on, an Xbox 360 version was released, but due to the acquisition of former publisher RedOctane, Activision published that version. The last game in the series developed by Harmonix (afterwards, the company was bought by MTV Studios and has since been the developer for the Rock Band series) was an expansion pack entitled Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s. All later games would be developed by Neversoft. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was released to all major consoles on October 28, 2007. In the main series, however, this version was the least well received, receiving scores in the low-to-mid 80% range from Metacritic. This game was followed by another spin-off title, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. The fourth installment in the main series, Guitar Hero: World Tour was released on October 26, 2008. The band play, designed to compete with Rock Band, contributed to the great amount of sales.
