I know its rather mundane work but fighting vandals is one of the primary functions (although certainly not the only reason) for Admins/Sysops right now. Perhaps this will change in the future. If you want to become an Admin I would suggest fighting vandalism. Fix vandalism and let an Admin who is Bureaucrat know about the vandal. Bureacrats can nominate people to Admin status.
