The '''Watergate Scandal''' was a political scandal leading to President Richard M. Nixon's resignation. It began when members of the campaign to reelect [[Richard Nixon]] spied on the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel during the 1972 presidential election. What might have been no more than an embarrassing scandal blew up when it transpired that White House officials and Nixon himself were engaged in trying to cover up these events, and it became clear that Congress was likely to impeach Nixon for obstruction of justice.
