Tin(II) oxide, also known as stannous oxide, is a chemical compound. Its chemical formula is SnO. It has tin and oxide ions in it. It has tin in its +2 oxidation state.
Properties
Tin(II) oxide is a blue-black solid. It is sometimes red, but this red form is more unstable. It burns in air to make tin(IV) oxide, also known as tin dioxide.
Preparation
It can be made by reacting tin(II) sulfate with sodium hydroxide. The white hydrate that is made is heated to make the black oxide. The red form is more difficult to make.
