The people from Virgina wanted to secede from the Union, while many counties in West Virginia wanted to remain a part of the Union, and thus seceded from Virginia to create West Virginia. Sometimes called "Wild and Wonderful", "Wild and Woolly", West Virginia is perhaps most beloved when called by that nickname "West-''by-God''".
