Gloucestershire is a [[county]] in central southern [[England]] that formerly contained the famous port city of [[Bristol]]. In 1974 Bristol was given its own county called [[Avon]], and although this was abolished in 1996 Bristol itself was not placed back into any county, and is thus unique in England.
